Tropical climate influences on drought variability over Java, Indonesia

چکیده
[1] We investigate relationships between Indonesian drought, the state of the equatorial Indian Ocean, and ENSO using three instrumental indices spanning 1884– 1997 A.D.: 1. EQWIN, a zonal wind index for the equatorial Indian Ocean; 2. the Dipole Mode Index (DMI), an indicator of the Indian Ocean SST gradient; and 3. tropical Pacific Niño-3.4 SSTs. A regression model of the Java Sep–Dec Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) using a combination of these indices provides significant predictive skill (ar = 0.50). Both the DMI and EQWIN correlate strongly with Java droughts (r = 0.71 and 0.66, respectively), but weakly with wet events (r = 0.21 and 0.18, respectively), while the Niño SST index correlates moderately with both dry and wet events (r = 0.31 and 0.36, respectively). Our findings indicate that Java droughts are intensified during El Niños that coincide with negative EQWIN conditions, which are also linked to a strengthened Indian monsoon. Links between Indo-Pacific climate variability and drought in the Monsoon Asia Drought Atlas
Drought patterns across monsoon and temperate Asia over the period 1877–2005 are linked to IndoPacific climate variability associated with the El NiñoSouthern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). Using the Monsoon Asia Drought Atlas (MADA) composed of a high-resolution network of hydroclimatically sensitive tree-ring records with a focus on the June– August months, spatial drou...
متن کاملDifferential Heating in the Indian Ocean Differentially Modulates Precipitation in the Ganges and Brahmaputra Basins
Indo-Pacific sea surface temperature dynamics play a prominent role in Asian summer monsoon variability. Two interactive climate modes of the Indo-Pacific—the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean dipole mode—modulate the amount of precipitation over India, in addition to precipitation over Africa, Indonesia, and Australia. However, this modulation is not spatially uniform. T...

Using a high-resolution regional climate model—the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics Regional Climate Model version 3 (RegCM3)—and station and satellite observations, the authors have studied the spatial heterogeneity of climate variability over Java Island, Indonesia. Besides the wellknown anomalous dry conditions that characterize the dry and transition seasons during a...

Using a high-resolution regional climate model RegCM3, station and satellite observations, we have studied the spatial heterogeneity of climate variability over Java Island, Indonesia. Besides the well-known anomalous dry conditions that characterize the dry and transition seasons during an El Niño year, analysis of regional model output reveals a wet mountainous south versus dry northern plain...
متن کاملUnderstanding the Central Equatorial African long-term drought using AMIP-type simulations
The Earth’s climate has significantly changed under global warming due to increasing anthropogenic greenhouse gases (Hartmann et al. 2013). Not only are temperatures varying but rainfall variability and patterns are also changing. The impacts of climate change are not spatially uniform, and Africa is identified as one of the most vulnerable continents (Ludwig et al. 2013). Recent studies on Afr...
